- Description
This boro kimono, believed to originate from the region of present-day Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture, is constructed from a remarkable assemblage of repurposed cotton and silk textiles. Rather than the densely layered repairs often associated with work garments, this example is composed of carefully selected fragments whose varied colors, patterns, and textures create a balanced and visually compelling patchwork.
Indigo-dyed cottons are joined with panels of striped, checked, and solid-colored cloth, while sections of silk introduce subtle shifts in tone and sheen. The arrangement of the fragments reflects both practicality and aesthetic consideration, transforming worn materials into a cohesive garment of striking character. Evidence of use and repair remains visible throughout, preserving a record of the kimono’s long life and continued care.
While its exact history is unknown, it was likely worn by a rural individual of modest means for everyday use or on occasions of greater significance.
