Wisteria Yarn and Indigo Dyed Cotton

Woven from the inner bark fibers of wild wisteria, this Fujifu Kimono represents one of the rarest textile traditions in rural Japan. Historically produced in only a handful of communities along the Sea of Japan (including northern Kyoto, Fukui, and Niigata prefectures) fujifu was valued for its exceptional strength, durability, and practical use.

This robe is constructed from handwoven natural wisteria fiber, giving the surface a coarse yet supple texture with subtle variations in tone that reflect the character of the material. Its restrained design is defined by a simple T-shaped silhouette, broad sleeves, and an understated black patterned collar that provides a quiet contrast to the warm brown cloth. Visible panel seams and careful hand stitching reveal the skill required to transform a challenging natural fiber into a wearable textile.

The tradition continues on a small scale in the Tango region of Kyoto Prefecture, where a preservation society still harvests wild wisteria, spins its fibers into yarn, and produces limited examples of this remarkable cloth, ensuring that the knowledge of fujifu weaving is not lost.
