This Kuro Tokkuri is part of a study of twenty sake flasks by Shiro Tsujimura exploring subtle variations in form. Unified by their charcoal-black surfaces, the vessels share a common vocabulary of rounded bodies, narrowing shoulders, short necks, and irregularly shaped mouths. Within these parameters, however, no two are alike. Some are tall and slender, others broad and full; bodies shift from elongated ovals to generous pear shapes, while necks vary in height and rims tilt, flare, and compress.
Seen together, these differences become increasingly pronounced, drawing attention to the decisions that give each vessel its individual character. The relative consistency of the dark surfaces further emphasizes silhouette, proportion, and volume, allowing form to take precedence over decoration. Across the group, repetition becomes a means of exploration, demonstrating how seemingly modest adjustments to a familiar vessel type can produce twenty distinctly individual works.
