Aki Rusu creates sculptures that explore the expressive possibilities of iron. A graduate of Tama Art University (MFA, 2002), she established her own studio in 2012. Through welding, fusion cutting, and experimental processes such as stacking and roasting small fragments, she transforms iron’s natural qualities – oxidation, rust, and decay – into compelling sculptural forms.

For Rusu, observation is at the heart of her practice. She carefully studies the material’s transformations, even incorporating molten iron droplets normally regarded as waste. These fragments, with their varied shapes and textures, guide her creative process, resulting in works that embody a dialogue between artist and material. She describes these moments as “secret discoveries” shared with iron, intimate exchanges that inspire new forms and rhythms.

Rusu has received the Tansuioh Grand Prize (2017), the Takashimaya Art Award (2016), and a Contemporary Art Award from the Japan Arts Foundation (2003).
