Portrait of Japanese artist Shunichi Yabe in a white shirt photographed against a dark studio background...

Shunichi Yabe is a sculptor and ceramic artist from Bizen, Okayama, site of one of Japan’s six ancient kilns and known for its unglazed, earthy pottery. Initially trained in sculpture at Nagoya University of the Arts, Yabe returned home in 1993 to study ceramics under his grandfather, Living National Treasure Toshu Yamamoto, and his father, Atsuro Yabe.

Rooted in Bizen’s primitive clay traditions, he integrates modern sculptural techniques to create his distinctive series “Kukoku,” known for its sharp, minimal forms shaped by light and fire. After a 2015 residency at Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, Yabe began integrating precious metals (gold, silver, palladium) into Bizen clay surfaces, redefining the traditionally unglazed aesthetic.

A multiple award recipient, including the Kikuchi Biennale (2009) and Mino International Ceramics Festival (2011), Yabe continues to expand the expressive potential of Japan’s oldest pottery tradition.
