- Description
This bashōfu kimono exemplifies the rare and labor-intensive textile tradition of Okinawa, woven from the fine fibers of the Japanese banana plant (ito basho). Celebrated for its breathable, lightweight quality and natural beauty, bashōfu has been produced in northern Okinawa for centuries and continues as one of Japan’s Important Intangible Cultural Properties.
The garment’s broad, decorative stripes (enhanced in part with safflower dye) create a warm palette of earthy brown, tan, and subtle dark accents, reflecting both the natural material and artisanal dyeing. While the kimono’s silhouette recalls the tailored shape favored on Honshu, suggesting either final finishing there or Okinawan tailoring to mainland tastes, the fabric itself embodies the traditional craft of hand-spun banana fiber weaving.
This bashōfu robe thus bridges regional textile heritage with broader Japanese sartorial influence, outstanding for both its aesthetic charm and cultural significance.
