Dark Light is a hypnotizing mixed-media wall work that explores perceptual depth through traditional urushi lacquer and embedded metal washers. Trained in classical lacquer techniques at Kyoto City University of Arts, Ishizuka uses repetition and precision to create optical movement, with industrial materials transforming into a meditative field of chromatic intensity. The composition draws the viewer to a central zone of darkness, as if pulled by an unseen gravitational force.
In an outer glowing red field, hundreds of gold- and black-toned rings shimmer like points of light, their density subtly shifting as you move from the outside edges to the center. The glossy lacquer amplifies this effect, reflecting ambient light and inviting the viewer’s own presence into the work. Dark Light holds tension between luminosity and darkness, surface and depth, revealing how light itself can be shaped, gathered, and quietly absorbed.
