- Description
Étranger by Aki Rusu is a sculptural meditation on balance, composed of elongated, architectural iron elements that appear to hover just above the ground. Slender rods descend like suspended threads. These hanging drip-like elements are not decorative; they register gravity and cooling time, making physical forces visible. Though the forms appear fragile, the forged iron asserts quiet strength, creating tension between delicacy and durability.
The composition feels poised in a state of precarious stillness, as if movement or impact could occur, yet never does. Rusu’s process emphasizes restraint – stretching, suspending, and allowing gravity to shape the work so that negative space becomes an active structural force. The voids between elements function architecturally, shaping how the work is read as much as the iron itself. Space is not surrounding the sculpture – it completes it. Étranger ultimately conveys a sense of estrangement between mass and air, action and pause, inviting contemplation of latent power held in equilibrium.
