This Haikaburi Kurinuki Tea Bowl by Masanao Kaneta reflects the artist’s characteristic fusion of sculptural clarity and natural, ash-fired expression. Carved from a single block of clay, the vessel presents a subtly faceted form that widens gently toward the rim, where a soft, irregular edge reveals the hand’s presence. The surface is coated in a pale gray glaze infused with warm, earthy undertones, creating a gradient that shifts from cool stone-like hues to touches of sienna and charcoal. Ash from the wood firing settles into delicate speckles and flowing marks, enhancing the bowl’s atmospheric quality. Despite its refined finish, the piece retains the tactile honesty of kurinuki, with each plane and curve shaped through intuitive subtraction. The result is a tea bowl that feels both contemporary and deeply rooted in the traditions of material, fire, and intimate daily use.
