This Haikaburi Kurinuki Tea Bowl by Masanao Kaneta embodies the artist’s refined command of form, fire, and material. Carved from a single block of clay, the vessel features a faceted, gently swelling silhouette that rises toward an irregular, softly undulating rim. Its surface is animated by the haikaburi (ash-covered) firing process, where falling ash melts into ribbons of dark green, charcoal, and warm earthen tones. These flowing, organic patterns create the impression of a landscape in motion, contrasting with the deliberate chisel marks of the kurinuki technique. The bowl’s lower section reveals deeper, richer hues, grounding the form with a sense of weight and quiet presence. Both sculptural and intimate, the piece reflects Kaneta’s ability to merge contemporary expression with the contemplative spirit of the tea tradition, inviting close study and tactile engagement.
