Shiro Tsujimura’s Oribe Kuro Chawan presents a quietly compelling balance of gesture, texture, and form. Shaped by hand into a soft oval silhouette, the bowl embodies Tsujimura’s intuitive approach, favoring organic asymmetry over rigid geometry. The deep black glaze – rich, lustrous, and subtly iridescent – accentuates the vessel’s undulating surface, catching light along its gently sloping rim. A raised band encircles the body, lending structure and emphasizing the rhythm of the artist’s forming process. The interior reveals a smooth, pooled glaze that traces faint concentric curves, while the exterior bears natural kiln variations that heighten the sense of material immediacy. Rooted in the Oribe tradition yet unmistakably contemporary, this chawan reflects Tsujimura’s ability to transform clay and flame into vessels that feel both ancient and alive, objects shaped as much by intuition as by fire.
