Triangular Jar exemplifies the rigorous formal intelligence of Mori Tōgaku, one of the leading figures in the revival of traditional Bizen wood-firing. Deeply informed by spiritual practice and historical research, Tōgaku is known for constructing large, Momoyama-inspired climbing kilns and for reintroducing the ōgama firing method to contemporary ceramics. His kilns draw on Muromachi-period precedents and early Chinese Sue ware, grounding his work in time-honored traditions.
In this jar, the finished surface is intentionally restrained, ensuring it does not compete with the complexity of the form. Sharply faceted planes and a folded triangular mouth articulate the vessel’s geometry, while gas kilns were used in tandem with large-scale firings to explore subtle coloration and tonal nuance. The result is a work that feels both ancient and resolutely modern—an object shaped by fire, structure, and quiet authority rather than decorative excess.
