This White Glaze Youhen Kurinuki Guinomi by Masanao Kaneta showcases the artist’s distinctive blend of sculptural form and atmospheric glazing. Carved from a single block of clay, the vessel features a softly faceted silhouette that subtly swells and contracts, giving the piece an organic, almost breathing presence. The white youhen glaze flows gently across the surface, shifting between pale ivory, warm blush tones, and areas of smoky gray where ash and flame have interacted with the clay. Speckling and dark linear accents add depth, emphasizing the bowl’s natural textures and the unpredictability of the firing process. The irregular rim invites touch, while the compact scale of the guinomi (designed for sake) enhances its sense of intimacy. Both contemporary and deeply rooted in traditional craft, the bowl reflects Kaneta’s mastery of kurinuki carving and his poetic sensitivity to fire, clay, and form.
