- Description
This Black Tokkuri by Ryuichi Kakurezaki presents a forceful reinterpretation of the traditional sake flask, rising from block-like feet that stabilize the form. The body appears carved rather than conventionally thrown, with faceted planes that taper upward toward a narrow neck and compressed mouth. Its dark, iron-rich surface (ranging from dark green to matte charcoal and deep black) shows subtle traces of ash, revealing the effects of wood firing and kiln placement. Pitting, seams, and irregular edges are intentionally retained, emphasizing material process and structural clarity. The work demonstrates Kakurezaki’s sustained investigation of how traditional vessel forms can be reshaped into structurally assertive, contemporary ceramic objects while remaining fully functional.
