Flowing Flower IV is a sculptural yet fully functional ceramic flower vase that exemplifies the artist’s radical approach to Bizen clay. Horizontally oriented and asymmetrical, the elongated, tapering form suggests erosion and passage, resembling an object worn down by wind or water and shaped through gradual loss rather than accumulation. Cut edges, dripping glaze, and softened contours evoke natural decay and continual change, reinforcing a sense of impermanence.
The surface bears the unmistakable marks of Kakurezaki’s process, cut and reassembled clay animated by ash deposits, flashing, and subtle tonal variation produced during high-temperature wood firing. Textural contrasts move between rough, eroded passages and smoother planes, emphasizing the dialogue between intention and chance. Flowing Flower IV transforms the flower vase into a meditation on time, material, and movement.
