- Description
Sai (犀), meaning “rhinoceros,” is an iron sculpture by Aki Rusu that embodies latent power through balance, restraint, and material presence. Forged from iron, the work combines jagged, branch-like elements with a compact, weighted core. Slender extensions appear fragile, yet the density and tensile strength of the material assert quiet authority. The surface bears traces of heat, oxidation, and handwork, emphasizing iron’s transformation through fire and force.
The composition feels poised, as if movement or impact could occur at any moment, yet it remains held in suspension. Slender elements look fragile, yet the material implies strength. This tension between delicacy and mass, stillness and implied motion, defines the sculpture’s presence. Like much of Rusu’s work, Sai resists overt gesture, allowing power to remain compressed and internalized, sensed through form rather than spectacle.
