Asahi (Morning Sun) is a characteristic example of the mature style of Raku Chōnyū VII, created when the artist was in his forties and had established a distinctive approach within the Raku lineage. Chōnyū favored generously proportioned tea bowls with a strong physical presence, distinguishing his work from the more restrained forms of several of his predecessors.
Formed from Juraku clay, Asahi has a broad, low-set body animated by pronounced horizontal spatula marks, a defining feature of Chōnyū’s work. A yellow slip beneath a transparent Red Raku glaze containing quartz produces a finely textured surface dominated by warm red and reddish-brown tones. Across the exterior, these colors shift into areas of deep brown, black, and muted violet, creating considerable variation as the bowl is turned in the hand. The exposed clay surrounding the foot provides a counterpoint to the richly fired surface, while Chōnyū’s Raku seal appears within the foot ring.
Fired in a Red Raku kiln, Asahi demonstrates the vigorous modeling, generous proportions, and complex glaze effects that distinguish Chōnyū’s individual contribution to the Raku tradition.
