- Description
This tea bowl moves far beyond the quiet contemplation of classic chawan (tea bowls), presenting instead a powerful, dynamic form. The bowl features a thick, heavily textured body with a naturally irregular, undulating rim.
The glaze patterning is highly complex and contributes significantly to the bowl’s raw aesthetic. The surface is dominated by a dense black glaze that appears to flow and drip unevenly across the body. This glaze creates areas of deep, glossy obsidian, but where it shears away or thins over the high points of the texture, it exposes the underlying clay’s earthy brown color. Furthermore, the glaze exhibits subtle iridescent metallic blue and bronze hues, which appear to shimmer and break across the heavier black areas, giving the surface a stratified, geological appearance. The contrast between the rough, unglazed clay and the dramatic, viscous, patterned glaze emphasizes the bowl’s sculptural quality. The piece reflects a raw, organic energy that is a hallmark of avant-garde Bizen artists, transforming the functional bowl into a striking object that emphasizes the beauty of material and fire.
